AdvanceTEC Internship Program

September 2, 2020

Remember When Your Were Just Starting Your Career?

Do you remember your first real job?  Do you remember what it felt like coming into a company as a college kid?  The excitement.  The uncertainty.  As this summer comes to a close and the new school year starts, I got to thinking about the opportunities I was given early in my career and how at AdvanceTEC we’re providing opportunities for the next generation of leaders.

For a number of years, the AdvanceTEC Internship Program has provided opportunities for students to get real life experience to augment their studies.  This year, we were excited to have four students join the AdvanceTEC team for the summer:  Matthew Reid, Melissa Burton, Cole Jordan and Matthew Burton.  While our goal is to help them gain valuable real-world experience, the energy, excitement and ideas that they brought make an impact on the AdvanceTEC team as well.  I want to take this opportunity to thank each of them for their contributions this summer, and wish them the very best as they return to school.  To learn more about these students and the AdvanceTEC Internship Program, check out the additional information at the bottom of this post.

My hope is that years from now when Matt, Melissa, Cole and Matt look back on the early days of their career, they’ll remember the summer of 2020 and their time at AdvanceTEC.  Who knows?  At that point they may even be mentoring their own intern at AdvanceTEC!

About the AdvanceTEC Internship Program - 2020

AdvanceTEC internships are more than just taking meeting notes, making copies, or going out for coffee runs. When you are brought on at AdvanceTEC, you are immediately integrated within the team where you are challenged to learn new skills and push yourself in a fast-paced, high-tech environment. Our interns have been an incremental piece to serving our leading-edge customers. From supply chain analytics and 3D printing, to airflow calculations and cleanroom electrical design, our group of young professionals are taking advantage of every opportunity they get!

Fitting in with our core group of AdvanceTEC employees this year has been Matthew Reid, Melissa Burton, Cole Jordan and Matthew Burton – all taking on the challenges our team members face every day. Below is a breakdown of our 2020 intern team and what they have been working on here at AdvanceTEC.

Matthew Reid
School:
Clemson University
Major: Mathematical Sciences with a concentration in Computer Science
Graduation Year: 2023

Role at AdvanceTEC: Tasked with automating project estimates, Matthew was brought on to the design team to utilize Revit to its full potential. With a background in mathematics, Matthew applied his skills to learn supply airflow, HEPA, return design and air handler calculations. After learning these various calcs, he then worked with our engineers, discussing ideas about how to improve their workflow process.

Melissa Burton
School:
University of South Carolina
Major: Supply Chain Management and Business Management Human Resource with a concentration in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management
Graduation Year: 2021

Role at AdvanceTEC: Melissa worked with our administration team where she analyzed purchasing orders to find the best supplier and partnership for AdvanceTEC. As a supply chain management and business management human resource major, she used her skills to research, price, and develop purchasing agreements to streamline procurements. In doing so, Melissa developed an interactive database of all our suppliers’ information where she can then improve AdvanceTECs annual spend.

Cole Jordan
School:
Virginia Commonwealth University
Major: Electrical Engineering
Graduation Year: 2022

Role at AdvanceTEC: Cole worked with our engineering team where he gets his hands dirty on a wide range of cleanroom projects. From designing, maintaining, implementing electrical sheets and systems for cleanroom applications to performing lighting calculations and creating parametric families in Revit, no two days were the same for Cole. Picking the AdvanceTEC cleanroom masterminds, Cole applied his schooling along with the knowledge he has gained from the engineering team to help push out design packages for some of the world’s most innovative companies.

Matthew Burton
School:
High Point University
Major: Computer Science
Graduation Year: 2024

Role at AdvanceTEC: Leading 3D printing efforts, Matthew experimented with multiple cleanroom models to fast track AdvanceTECs printing process. He started by learning Revit and then breaking up the model into printable pieces. After troubleshooting printer settings, changing the PLA and adjusting numerous Revit models, the final 3D products are finished and ready to be assembled. Matthews determination to progress AdvanceTEC’s 3D printing capabilities has fueled the design team to push the printer to its full capabilities.
