AdvanceTEC Congratulates Jacobs Field Service N.A. on the 2011 ENR SE Best Industrial Project Award for Merck & Co. VBF

Cleanroom contractor AdvanceTEC's design-assist and construction plays key role in the success of the Jacobs led VBF team
Richmond, VA, November 10, 2011 – AdvanceTEC, a leader in cleanroom design and construction, today congratulated Merck and Jacobs Field Service North America on winning the 2011 Best Industrial Project Award from ENR Southeast for the execution of the Merck Vaccine Bulk Manufacturing Facility (VBF) project in Durham, NC. The Award recognizes the performance of the Jacobs led project team, which included AdvanceTEC, for the fast-track design and construction of the world-class facility in a timeframe that shattered all previous industry and Merck benchmarks, while remaining under budget. The Merck VBF project was chosen for this Award by a panel of industry professionals, who considered nominations from the southeast region of Alabama, the Carolinas, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and Virginia.
The $315 million Merck VBF project included the 214,000 square foot Bulk Vaccine Manufacturing building as well as a number of additional infrastructure expansions and support facilities. The Jacobs led design-build team beat Merck’s internal schedule by 5 months and industry benchmark by 16 months from funding approval to operational qualification completion while staying on budget. It also has been recognized for its exemplary safety record, earning the North Carolina Department of Labor Building Star status and the CURT 2010 Owners Safety Excellence Award with over 1.45 million craft safe hours were worked without a lost time injury and a TRIR of 0.40
“Executing safely in a collaborative environment to an extremely aggressive schedule was critical to the success of this project which had an independent early risk analysis that indicated we had less than a 3% chance of meeting the schedule,” commented Tom Chapman, Jacobs Field Services North America site manager for the VBF project in Durham, NC. “AdvanceTEC played an important role in meeting our project timeline. They brought a customer-centric approach, delivering world-class quality design and workmanship while meeting each key milestone date put in front of them. Once again, AdvanceTEC has proven to Jacobs that they can be counted on to do what it takes.”

In addition to the ENR Southeast 2011 Best Industrial Project Award, the project was also selected as one of four outstanding projects to vie for the overall Best Project Award for the region, and will compete nationally in ENR’s Best of the Best competition.
